AAWA Background History

This organization is comprised of African-American Women of many educational, religious, occupational and familial backgrounds. A common goal and determination to create a better foundation, first for African-American women and other women of color, then all women and families in general, has bought us together.  Each committee is born from the original agenda as set forth, to engage the city of Cleveland's leadership to be inclusive of the needs of African-American women and their families when making decisions, setting policy, and creating programs, or jobs.

As we go forth with this campaign, the agenda is expanded to include issues related to entrepreneurial leadership as well as, political leadership.

PREAMBLE

The African-American Women’s Agenda is meant as a call for action to improve the quality of life for African-American women in the City of Cleveland.  By no means was this agenda drafted to exclude other Cleveland women – on the contrary, other women of color and white women, to different degrees, share the same concerns that their African-American sisters have.  While we write this agenda with a focus on our African-American sisters in Cleveland, we firmly believe that as this agenda is enacted it will improve the quality of life for all women in Cleveland.
